2025 Hunt Clinic
Have you ever wanted to learn more about Mounted Hunting with Hounds, commonly known as Fox Hunting, and try it, or know someone who does? Well Moore County Hounds has a great four part hunt clinic to help introduce riders and horses to Fox Hunting. Who is invited - EVERYONE!!! This is a great event for pony clubbers, riders of any discipline, and varying ability of horse and rider.
SESSION 1 – INTRODUCTION AND WALK OUT WITH HOUNDS – Fee = $0 August 23rd – 9:00AM - MCH Clubhouse - 946 Sheldon Road, Southern Pines, NC (please park along the shoulder of the dirt road, not blocking passage!) Join us unmounted at the MCH Clubhouse. Joint Masters David Carter and Mike Russell at 9:00am at the MCH Clubhouse for a presentation of the history, etiquette and rules along with dress code for mounted hunting with hounds. There will be refreshments and a question-and-answer time. You’ll also have a chance to meet and walk out with the Moore County Hounds! SESSION 2 – GROUP TRAIL RIDE – Fee = $50 August 24th – 9:00AM - MCH Kennels - 946 Sheldon Road, Southern Pines, NC (please park along the shoulder of the dirt road, not blocking passage!) Join us mounted at the MCH Kennels. Ride with the MCH Hunt Clinic Leaders and Hunt Staff to ride through the Walthour-Moss Foundation for a Group Trail Ride; Focusing on some of the rules and skills practiced in the Huntfield. A slower group will be offered. Even experienced trail horses can get excited in a larger group, so we recommend using tack that keeps you secure and safe. SESSION 3 – RIDE WITH HOUNDS – Fee = $50, September 13th -- 8:00AM - Lyell’s Meadow – 119-283 Mile Away Lane, Southern Pines, NC (near the intersection of Mile Away Lane and May Street) Join us for a mounted ride with hounds. We will ride out together in various groups (First and Second Flight and Hilltoppers) behind the MCH Huntsman. He will be guiding the hounds through Walthour-Moss Foundation for about an hour-long ride. As the hounds will NOT be hunting, it is a great time for horses not accustomed to hunting to be introduced gently to hounds and their movement. There will be many senior fox hunting horses and riders that can provide support as role models to any green horses and/or riders. SESSION 4 – RIDE IN THE HUNT FIELD – Fee = $50 September 14th -- 9:00AM - WMF Hunter Trials Field – 251 Old Mail Road, Southern Pines, NC (near the intersection of Youngs Road and Old Mail Road) Join us mounted at the WMF Hunter Trials Field, Ride with us in three flights simulating a typical hunt field. A First Flight group will have jumping lessons to provide exercises for riders to improve position, control, confidence and security. We will practice jumping in a queue and discuss what to do when various unplanned situations arise! Jumping experience is not necessary as there will also be groups of Second Flight and Hilltoppers (Walk/trot/canter/non-jumping and walking and trotting only) working on small natural obstacles. DO-IT-ALL! – Fee $150 Join us for all four clinics! Attend all four clinics with your horse and upon successful completion of all 4 days you will receive a waiver for a free Capping Fee for a Cub Hunting in October.
